The Initiative for the Development of Former Child Soldiers (IDEFOCS) is a Liberian nonprofit dedicated to the rehabilitation and reintegration of former child soldiers, addiction-affected persons, and their families. Founded in Ghana Morrise 20 2003, IDEFOCS carries out its mission through two affiliate programs: the RILO Foundation Education Syste;m (RIFES) which provides free education to kids whose parents are former child soldiers and drugs users including kids from low income communities and the Botanical Reintegration Village (BRV), where we respectively serve former child soldiers and adults affected by warfare and drug abuse in Grand Bassa County, Liberia.

Through its actions and advocacy, IDEFOCS assumes a leading role in the Liberian fight against child exploitation and economic inequality. The RILO Foundation and the BRV provide free primary education, scholarship advocacy, trauma counseling, and work skills training to its patrons. In doing so, it works with educators and civil society activists at the regional, national, and international levels.
Despite its broad network, IDEFOCS draws its power from its grassroots identity. Its founder, Morris Yeagar Matadi, is a former child soldier and social entrepreneur with roots in the Monrovia and Buchanan areas. Since 2003 Morris has advocated for greater local and international assistance for Liberian citizens who were exploited at a young age by the violence of the country’s civil wars.

Morris’s deep familiarity with the challenges and stigmas facing conflict- and drug-affected communities has driven the success of his organization. IDEFOCS is an outgrowth of Morris’s work and vision, which holds that local and firsthand knowledge must inform all development initiatives. By providing their neighbors with the tools to advance and give back, Morris and his team are making themselves, their community, and their world a more sustainable and joyous place.
